Rocket Man
What do you think the chances are of him returning for his final season back in Boston? In my opinion, I think he will, and if he does, we will be the team with the best chance to win the world series, and what a way to go out for him. What do you guys think?
Trade Manny? Are you crazy?
So the Manny Ramirez trade talk begins again. We would look like fools to trade Manny unless we could get one hell of a player in return. We go out and spend what will end up being over 100 million on someone who has never played in the majors but we want to trade a guy who has hit at least 30 homers ever year and continues to put up huge numbers? I mean would you want to trade Pedro Martinez had we kept him and he was healthy? Look at the contracts players are getting in today's market. Why should we give another team Manny just because we do not like his attitude. People should understand that he is accustom to a totally different way of life than our ways in America. Pedro was the same way with being selfish at times, but Pedro had charisma, which Manny lacks. Pedro was able to smile and go about it in his own little way while "Manny is just being Manny." I have no problem with him giving up at the end of the year, if you want to call it that. What if he got hurt and we have $40 million locked up in a guy who is never going to play again? As soon as Kevin Jarvis was pitching every fifth day, David Wells was traded, Kyle Snyder, (whom the worst team in baseball gave up on) was someone we depended on, and Julian Tavarez was our top starter, we had no chance. If we had a chance to make the playoffs, Manny would have been there, injured or not. All I know is you don't trade the 2nd best hitter on your team with a lineup with only one other legitimate power hitter, just because you don't like his persona. Give me Vlad Guerrero, because that's what it would take for me to trade Manny. I'll throw in Taverez to make it fair, because he is unhappy too. In other words, it is a stupid idea, the team is better with him, and we need to accept it.
My take on the Jon Lester story.
I have the feeling we may never see Jon Lester pitch again. The Red Sox are not counting on him to be there at all next year. I can tell by the way they approach the media on the situation. Basically, they have nothing to say but "he's doing well and our hopes are with him" In other words, he's not going to die, and of course there hopes are with them, they are human after all, but as far as playing baseball, I personally don't see it happening. So I'll take the Sox approach and say I'm happy he's alive and well.
Personally I'll say, he's in his early 20's just like me and if I had come down with cancer when he did, I would not be thinking about my job at all. I know I would be happy to be in his situation where the Red Sox are obliged to help him, if for no other reason than to fair well with the Public and Red Sox nation. But I don't have that kind of support, everyone I've ever known in my life combined do not have 51 million dollars, no less to just throw around just to talk to a guy to technically work for them.
Lets just say, Lester is very unlucky, and it shows baseball players go through the same things as "the average Joe." He's lucky he's with the Sox and not working at burger king. I'm sure Keith Folk would understand that. I wonder if Keith has called him and asked how he's doing. Maybe he was too busy eating his triple stacker cheeseburger to even bother. But that's another topic that has already been covered.
Were all human from Pedro and Manny to Johnny from burger king, bad things can happen to anyone, and we have to make the best out of what were given.

Deal for D-Mat. Nomo Comparison.
I came across someone raising the question of if we were bluffing on D-Mat, here's my take on the whole situation....
If we sign Drew (another Boras client) for 4 years 40 mill which is outrageous but we could get Boras to give us D-Mat up to a 7 year deal, because we are really over paying for Drew and the contract for D-Mat would be something like 5 years guaranteed, 6 mil in 07 7.5 in 08, 10 in 09, 12 in 2010, 15 in 2011, team or mutual options around 17-20 mill for 2012-2013, I know we will get a deal done, I don't think Theo was bluffing, if he didn't think D-Mat was any good, why not let the yanks have another bust on there hands?
What D-Mat will do in the majors is an unknown. Nobody not Theo or Bill James the king of stats can really tell for sure, but he's compared to what Nomo did in his early Dogger days. He's younger with more upside. Nomo was ROY I believe, and one of the top starters in the NL for about 4 years, and he was 2 years older than D-Mat. So 6 years sounds good to me. Remember Nomo mania? I think we'll sign him, make money from Jappanese media, and have a nice young arm for years to come.

I would love to have Bronson back, if not for the only reason he is a part time rock musician like myself. Pena could easily hit 30 hr for someone if anyone wants to play him full time and needs a big bat with a low contract. If Soriano can make 136 million until the age of 38, I think we should get a lot for a 24 (25 in spring training) year old power hitter who will make just as many errors in the field as Soriano. And when Soriano is sitting on the cubs DL like Wood and Prior in a few years, Pena will be coming into his prime. But to me he's a poor mans Manny, just with a smile on his face.
Varitek and Steroids
Am I the only one who thinks Varitek might have been into the Seroids? He had a huge drop off in stats in 2006. For a guy who's making 10 million whom we call our captain, .238 just doesn't cut it for me. Looks like we should have kept Damon and let Tek walk.
Maybe it was just a bad year for him, or maybe just had a bad case of the roids.

What I think the Red Sox Roster will be on opening day 2007, On Thanksgiving 06
Rotation
1. Clemens (call me optimistic)
2. Schilling ( He will go all out in his last season, and if I know anything about Schilling's character, he wants to make the hall of fame)
3. D-Mat (get a deal done, 5 years 10 mill a year max, if he's a bust, don't blame me, I didn't post 51 mill for him, if he's the next Pedro, I'll be surprised, but something like Beckett sounds about right)
4. Beckett - (will have a better era this year, and about 18 wins)
5. Papelbon - (If he can stay healthy, although I love him as a closer, give him a chance, I would rather see him fail as a starter and end up going back to closing than risk losing him to injury)
Pen'
Closer - Chad Cordero ( trade Pena, and a prospect who probably isn't going to make it (Hansen anyone?) Sorry but I don't think he's cut out for Boston, even if he is, will at best put up the stats Cordero already has, on top of it we only have him for 2 more years)
Set up- Danny Baez ( give him 2 years at 3-4 mill per max, if not look elsewhere)
Set up - Timlen
Long man - Tavarez
Long man/ 6th starter - Wakefield ( I see him getting quite a few starts, especially if Clemens gets a half year deal or can pitch when he wants)
5th or 6th inning - Delcarmen (showed me enough to give him a spot in the pen just with less pressure)
Lefty/Long Man - Gabbard (tough call but seems like the best fit that I can think of)
Line Up
1. Lugo - SS (just not at 8 mil a year, lets try for 5-6, not too many teams need a SS and are willing to pay him)
2. Crisp - CF (He will be better than last year for sure, not worth trading because not much of a market for him, and he's not getting paid much and our system has never produced many top or even okay OF's besides Nixon in 10 years
3. DH - hm this is the hardest one to figure out, I'll let you figure it out for yourself....
4. Manny - LF (yea we need him)
5. Drew - RF (hate to say it, but I see him as a package to sign D-Mat long term, maybe give Drew 4 years and D-Mat for 7 and under 10 mil per) if not take Nixon back.
6. Lowell - 3B (20 homers, gotta put him 6th I'm starting to think Tek might have been into the roids after such a drop off)
7. Tek -C ( losing his pop at the plate, still gets on base, can get a homer when least expected, more power than....
8. Youk - 1B (on base machine, not enough speed for lead off, good fit for us and him, I just hope he doesnt get a big head about himself, don't complain about the fans, that's my advice to anyone getting paid to play a game, and in Boston no less.)
9. Pedroia - 2b (Seems to fair well in analyst projections for 06, we'll see, but it's worth a shot, then again I thought dwayne hosey was going to be the next Kenny Lofton when he hit something like 330 for a few months in 96 or 97 and was a bust the next season, on the other had, Henley Ramirez struck out horribly in his only 2 plate appearances with us and I thought he would be a bust, obviously I was wrong about that.
Bench
SS/ 2b Cora
RF/Lf/3B/1B Hinske
C - ( give Mirabelli a minor league deal as well as a few others and give one a shot untill Kottaras is ready mid year)
OF- Kapler (won't play much and get injured but gotta love how hard he tries, the women seem to love him (maybe I can get my girlfriend to go to sox game if that's the case), start Murphy off at AAA waiting in the wings when Kap goes down)
Lastly, the RF situation, I'd love to throw Kevin Millar into the mix, if he doesn't mind being a role player, bring him back and forget Kapler, if anything, he makes the sox fun, even in the worst of times, made for a good cheerleader if anything else in 04.
That makes 25.
Any Comments?
